Comparing teacher roles in Denmark and England
This article reports the findings of a comparative study of teaching in Denmark and England; its broader aim is to help develop an approach for comparing pedagogy. Lesson observations and interviews identified the range of goals towards which teachers in each country worked and the actions these prompted. These were clustered using the lens of Bernstein’s pedagogic discourse (1990; 1996) to construct teacher roles which provided a view of pedagogy. Through this approach we have begun to identify variations in pedagogy across two countries. All teachers in this study adopted a variety of roles; of significance was the ease with which competent English teachers moved between roles. The English teachers observed adopted roles consistent with a wider techno-rationalist discourse. There was a greater subject emphasis by Danish teachers whose work was set predominantly within a democratic humanist discourse, whilst the English teachers placed a greater emphasis on applied skills
Two-region model for positive and negative plasma sheaths and its application to Hall thruster metallic anodes.
An asymptotic presheath/sheath model for positive and negative sheaths in front of a conducting electrode, with a continuous parametric transition at the no-sheath case, is presented. Key aspects of the model are as follows: full hydrodynamics of both species in the presheath; a kinetic formulation with a truncated distribution function for the repelled species within the sheath; and the fulfillment of the marginal Bohm condition at the sheath edge, in order to match the two formulations of the repelled species. The sheath regime depends on the ratios of particle fluxes and sound speeds between the two species. The presheath model includes the effect of a magnetic field parallel to the wall on electrons. An asymptotic, parametric study of the anode presheath is carried out in terms of the local ion-to-electron flux ratio and Hall parameter. The drift-diffusive model of magnetized electrons fails in a parametric region that includes parts of the negative sheath regime. In the case of the Hall parameter vanishing near the electrode and a weakly collisional plasma, a quasisonic, quasineutral plateau forms next to the sheath edge
Lag synchronization and scaling of chaotic attractor in coupled system
We report a design of delay coupling for lag synchronization in two
unidirectionally coupled chaotic oscillators. A delay term is introduced in the
definition of the coupling to target any desired lag between the driver and the
response. The stability of the lag synchronization is ensured by using the
Hurwitz matrix stability. We are able to scale up or down the size of a driver
attractor at a response system in presence of a lag. This allows compensating
the attenuation of the amplitude of a signal during transmission through a
delay line. The delay coupling is illustrated with numerical examples of 3D
systems, the Hindmarsh-Rose neuron model, the R\"ossler system and a Sprott
system and, a 4D system. We implemented the coupling in electronic circuit to
realize any desired lag synchronization in chaotic oscillators and scaling of
attractors.Comment: 10 pages, 7 figure
High-order Discretization of a Gyrokinetic Vlasov Model in Edge Plasma Geometry
We present a high-order spatial discretization of a continuum gyrokinetic
Vlasov model in axisymmetric tokamak edge plasma geometries. Such models
describe the phase space advection of plasma species distribution functions in
the absence of collisions. The gyrokinetic model is posed in a four-dimensional
phase space, upon which a grid is imposed when discretized. To mitigate the
computational cost associated with high-dimensional grids, we employ a
high-order discretization to reduce the grid size needed to achieve a given
level of accuracy relative to lower-order methods. Strong anisotropy induced by
the magnetic field motivates the use of mapped coordinate grids aligned with
magnetic flux surfaces. The natural partitioning of the edge geometry by the
separatrix between the closed and open field line regions leads to the
consideration of multiple mapped blocks, in what is known as a mapped
multiblock (MMB) approach. We describe the specialization of a more general
formalism that we have developed for the construction of high-order,
finite-volume discretizations on MMB grids, yielding the accurate evaluation of
the gyrokinetic Vlasov operator, the metric factors resulting from the MMB
coordinate mappings, and the interaction of blocks at adjacent boundaries. Our
conservative formulation of the gyrokinetic Vlasov model incorporates the fact
that the phase space velocity has zero divergence, which must be preserved
discretely to avoid truncation error accumulation. We describe an approach for
the discrete evaluation of the gyrokinetic phase space velocity that preserves
the divergence-free property to machine precision
A Scalable, Self-Analyzing Digital Locking System for use on Quantum Optics Experiments
Digital control of optics experiments has many advantages over analog control
systems, specifically in terms of scalability, cost, flexibility, and the
integration of system information into one location. We present a digital
control system, freely available for download online, specifically designed for
quantum optics experiments that allows for automatic and sequential re-locking
of optical components. We show how the inbuilt locking analysis tools,
including a white-noise network analyzer, can be used to help optimize
individual locks, and verify the long term stability of the digital system.
Finally, we present an example of the benefits of digital locking for quantum
optics by applying the code to a specific experiment used to characterize
optical Schrodinger cat states.Comment: 7 pages, 5 figure
